A boy has died in a suspected drowning at a South Australian swimming pool, leaving a small Riverland community in shock.

Emergency services were called to the Waikerie Pool on Lawrie Tce about 3.30pm on Saturday after the boy, 9, was pulled from the water unconscious.

Despite desperate attempts to revive the child, he tragically passed away en route to Waikerie Hospital.

A SA Police spokeswoman said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

SafeWork SA staff were seen patrolling the pool site on Sunday during their initial investigations.

In a post on their Facebook page, the Waikerie Community Pool said the swimming centre was closed as a result of the major incident.

“Our thoughts are with the family involved as well as the lifeguards, first responders and others present at the time,” the page owner said.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
