Josh Brolin has already had a huge impact on the Marvel universe. He was the man behind the purple face of Thanos, the Avengers’ ultimate villain. Thanos is dead, but Marvel’s not done with him. We’ve exclusively learned from our best insider source that Marvel is bringing Josh Brolin back not only to play Thanos again, but to play Cable as well.
First, let’s talk about Thanos, who at the end of Avengers: Endgame seemed very, very dead. In fact, he’s already been killed twice. It seems unlikely that Marvel will fully bring back the character as a major force in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but their upcoming slate of movies does involve a lot of time travel and shifting through alternate dimensions. Our source couldn’t confirm when or how Marvel plans to use Josh Brolin’s Thanos, only that he’ll be used in an upcoming Marvel series (that’s probably the already announced What If… where he’s confirmed to be voicing Thanos) and in other projects beyond that. If we had to guess those other projects beyond will probably be in an alternate universe visited by Doctor Strange in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. There’s probably a universe out there somewhere, where the Avengers failed to defeat Thanos and he’s still alive and enjoying his retirement.
So what about Cable? Josh Brolin has already played Cable, he appeared as the character in the last Deadpool movie. However, that movie was not a Marvel product, it was made by Fox back when they owned the rights to those characters. Now Marvel has the rights to Deadpool and Cable back, and they’ve already confirmed they’re planning to make more Deadpool movies with Ryan Reynolds. So it only makes sense that they’d hire Josh Brolin to reprise his role as Cable.
Cable is a pretty big part of the X-Men universe, so don’t be surprised if Josh Brolin ends up getting a lot of work in the MCU playing that iconic character. He knocked it out of the park in previous adventures, no reason to think he won’t continue to be perfect casting as Cable.
Josh Brolin is plenty busy, even without getting more work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He’s a big part of the upcoming and long delayed Dune movie. He also has two other movies and two TV shows in various stages of production. One of those TV shows will have him actually playing Josh Brolin, a selfish movie star who trips on ayahuasca and ends up becoming a self-help guru.
